Did Trump accept $10 million from the Egyptian dictator, and then release billions of dollars in military aid that had been on hold over human-rights abuses? Did his minions block the investigation to protect the Convicted Felon? The information is laid out in a highly detailed exclusive story by the Washington Post.
The story reports that, following a request from an group related to Egyptian intelligence to withdraw the $10M, bundles of hundred dollar bills were stuffed into paper bags.
Somehow, it’s not hard to believe.
We know that Egypt is ready to throw money at American politicians. Witness the corruption conviction of US Sen Robert Menendez, D-NJ.
The investigation into the $10M was shrouded in secrecy for the entirety of the more than three years the case was open, from 2017 to 2020, said the Post.
In an interview, Michael Sherwin, the then-acting US attorney who closed the case and a veteran prosecutor of complicated national security cases, said he had previously closed some where sufficient evidence never materialized. “I made the same decision here and I stand by it,” Sherwin said.
Still, doubts remain. Said one person close to the investigation, “Every American should be concerned about how this case ended. The Justice Department is supposed to follow evidence wherever it leads — it does so all the time to determine if a crime occurred or not."
And while there was not definitive, noted another: “It wasn’t a smoking gun. But it was very clear that there was so much smoke and now more smoke — there must be a fire.”
