Gerrymandering has Disenfranchised Local Democrats

We knew that Redistricting would be bad for us. But we didn’t know how bad.

The Texas Tribune has set up a unique app which compares actual results of the 2020 election to projected results of the same election after redistricting. The app is available at https://apps.texastribune.org/features/2021/texas-redistricting-map/ and through a link on the new 2024 Democratic Candidates page of this website.

The news is not good. Redistricting gave Trump and Trumpers more of an edge with nearly every change made to the Lago Vista/Pt. Venture/Jonestown districts.

The app includes maps so you can see just how our different our new districts are.

Essentially the Republican-controlled redistricting committee cut our area off from the rest of Travis and extended our new district borders into other counties full of white rural voters, mostly Republicans.

PREVIOUS DISTRICT: U.S. CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT 25

Actual 2020: 53.9% for Trump; 44.3% for Biden

AFTER REDISTRICTING: U.S. CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT 10

Projected: 58.5% for Trump; 39.7% for Biden

PREVIOUS DISTRICT: TX HOUSE DISTRICT 47

Actual 2020: 43.9 for Trump; 54.1 for Biden

AFTER REDISTRICTING: TX HOUSE DISTRICT 19

Projected: 69% for Trump; 29.5% for Biden

PREVIOUS DISTRICT: TX SENATE DISTRICT 14

Actual 2020: 27% for Trump; 70.8% for Biden

AFTER REDISTRICTING: TX SENATE DISTRICT 25

Projected: 58.3% for Trump; 40.1% for Biden

The one bit of joy in the projections:

PREVIOUS DISTRICT: STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION DISTRICT 10

Actual 2020: 49.3 for Trump; 48.7 for Biden

AFTER REDISTRICTING: STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION DISTRICT 5

Projected: 33.8 for Trump; 64.1 for Biden

It's going to take all of us working together to overcome this challenge!
