Students at Leander ISD’s Vanderbilt High School walked out to protest sharp budget cuts that will result in cutting some 200 teaching positions, and eliminate the school’s International Baccalaureate program.

Some students transferred to Vanderbilt solely for this program.

The district has a $34 million deficit, and is cutting expenses by $17 million, resulting in elimination of about 200 teaching positions. The district claims it can relocate most of the teachers, with cuts through attrition.

Let's fully fund Texas public schools. The state has plenty of money, but the GOP leadership does not support public education. Meanwhile, we are among the most poorly educated states in the USA.

Check these embarrassing statistics:

-- Texas ranks 46th out of 50 states for adult literacy

-- 19% of Texas adults lack basic prose literacy skills

-- 43% of adults with low literacy levels live in poverty

Make you a proud Texan? Yeah, me neither
