Liz Cheney deserves Presidential Medal of Freedom

By Mike Killalea, NSD president

Liz Cheney has been a rare voice of clarity and courage — and continues to be, writes Robert Reich in Substack.

He wrote, “At a time when most current and former Republican officials are mouthing Trump’s lies or keeping quiet — because they’ve sold their souls to their political ambitions or they’re intimidated by potential violence from Trump and his MAGA thugs — Cheney continues to serve the nation with courage and honor by telling the truth about the despicable traitor who will become president six weeks from now.”

You can applaud now for both Cheney and Reich.

The orange convict-elect in an appearance on Meet the Press where he threatened to persecute the January 6 House select committee, among others.

Wait: who’s the thuggy creep?

Members of that committee were “political thugs and, you know, creeps,” committing offenses in going about their work, he said.

“For what they did, honestly, they should go to jail,” Trump said, and called special counsel Jack Smith “very corrupt.”

This from a man who promises to pardon the violent, hateful Jan 6 traitors

Tell it, Liz!

He doesn’t scare Liz Cheney. Said she, “Here is the truth: Donald Trump attempted to overturn the 2020 presidential election and seize power,” she said in a statement.

“He mobilized an angry mob and sent them to the United States Capitol, where they attacked police officers, invaded the building and halted the official counting of electoral votes.

“Trump watched on television as police officers were brutally beaten and the Capitol was assaulted, refusing for hours to tell the mob to leave.

This was the worst breach of our Constitution by any president in our nation’s history.

“Donald Trump’s suggestion that members of Congress who later investigated his illegal and unconstitutional actions should be jailed is a continuation of his assault on the rule of law and the foundations of our republic.”

The Rump-called-Trump insists that the committee destroyed evidence. Another lie.

Check the evidence for yourself

In fact, as Reich pointed out, the committee released an 800-page report as well as 140 transcripts of testimony and various memos, emails and voice mail messages. The evidence remains online (link below)

Cheney let him have it: “Donald Trump knows his claims about the select committee are ridiculous and false, as has been detailed extensively, including by Chairman Thompson.

“There is no conceivably appropriate factual or constitutional basis for what Donald Trump is suggesting — a Justice Department investigation of the work of a congressional committee — and any lawyer who attempts to pursue that course would quickly find themselves engaged in sanctionable conduct.”

Trump continues to make threats. He said President Biden could pardon the committee members, “and maybe he should.”

Joe, celebrate her bravery, please

But Cheney doesn’t need a pardon from Biden, argues Reich,  because Trump’s claim wouldn’t last an instant in federal court. What she deserves from Biden is a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Not everyone has Liz Cheney’s cajones, of course. Trump said he has “heard from” knee-bending Amazon gazillionaire and destroyer of WAPO’s integrity Jeff Bezos, for instance.

“We’re having dinner,” said the Rump.
