Since last spring, more than a million Texas kids have lost their health insurance and food assistance. That’s when the provision in the federal COVID relief package that blocked states from kicking people off Medicaid expired. Now the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has a huge backlog of both SNAP and Medicaid applications to review in order to reinstate applicants.
They are starting with those least likely to qualify! Putting the ones who most need it in limbo, with months to wait. Texas now has the dubious distinction of failing to renew coverage more often than any other state in the country. See full story in the Austin Chronicle here.
