Ted Cruz might wish the Cancun Ted story would go away, but, after three years, the press and public don’t agree. And GOP Gov Greg Abbott is taking heat for pulling a CanCruz by jet setting to Asia when the state was attacked by Hurricane Beryl.
Texans still remember how Ted Cruz fled our state for Cancún during a devastating winter storm. Now, as Texans recover from Hurricane Beryl, Cruz’s legacy of abandoning Texas remains top of mind. (1,2)
Some wit posted on Reddit a “flow chart of whether one should “stay or go" during a weather crisis.” The chart asked piercing questions like, “Is Ted Cruz at the airport?” (If he is, flow chart says “go”) The post was reported in the San Antonio Express-News. (3,4)
Did Abbott abandon Texas during Beryl?
And Gov Greg Abbott’s absence during Hurricane Beryl forced the White House to “track down” state leaders to seek their formal request for a major disaster declaration following Hurricane Beryl, according to an exclusive interview with President Biden by the Houston Chronicle. CanCruz trolled for abandoning Texas during Winter Storm Uri
Says the San Antonio Current, “Three years after taking a family vacation to balmy Cancun while Winter Storm Uri left his constituents shivering — and some even dying — in their homes, Texas' junior senator just can't seem to shake that bad decision.” (6)
CanCruz tried to tweet some sage advice on the eve of Beryl’s landfall, but received only jeers and trolls. (See an example in the introduction artwork) (6)
And Abbott is in for his share of scolding, as he jetted off Friday, July 5, on an international trip organized by the Governor's Economic Development and Tourism Office. As reported by the Houston Chronicle, the trip was also organized and paid for by the independently funded nonprofit Texas Economic Development Corporation. (7,8)
Some online and in published reports have drawn comparisons to Sen Ted Cruz's decision to fly to Mexico following Texas' great freeze in 2021, the Chronicle reported (7)
White House had to ‘track down’ state leaders for Beryl relief
As reported earlier the White House had to “track down” state leaders regarding a Beryl disaster declaration. Consequently, the feds could.not distribute emergency relief supplies, including power generators, the Chronicle reported. (5)
The president told the Chronicle that he had been trying to contact the governor to get the necessary requests to release the federal aid, which includes manpower and supplies. (5)
“I’ve been trying to track down the governor to see — I don’t have any authority to do that without a specific request from the governor,” Biden said. (5)
